12:25pm–1:25pm
Meeting Rooms 209-210

Role of Machine Learning/AI in Quality Electronic Design

Chair & Moderator:
Vinod Viswanath - Director of Research and Development, Real Intent

Panelists:
Dr. Chris Rowen - CEO, Cognite Ventures
Dr. Drew Wingard - CEO, Sonics Inc.
Dr. Yankin Tanurhan - VP Engineering, Synopsys
Prof. Paul Franzon - Cirrus Logic Distinguished Professor of ECE, NCSU

Summary: Machine learning and AI is beginning to have an impact on system design and verification business, cutting the cost of designs by allowing tools to suggest solutions to common problems that would take design teams weeks or even months to work through. This reduces cost of designs, and potentially expands the market for such tools, opening the door to new designs and faster turnarounds. In this panel, we will have experts from industry and academia discussing the role of machine learning in designs of today and of a foreseeable future.

Dr. Chris Rowen Dr. Chris Rowen

About Dr. Chris Rowen

Chris Rowen is a well-known Silicon Valley entrepreneur and technologist. Most recently, he has led Cognite Ventures, a specialized analysis, investment and advisory company for deep learning start-ups. He has served as CTO for Cadence’s IP Group, where he and his team develop new processor and memory for advanced applications in mobile, automotive, infrastructure, deep learning and IoT systems. Chris joined Cadence after its acquisition of Tensilica, the company he founded to develop extensible processors. He led Tensilica as CEO and later, CTO, to become one of the most prolific embedded processor architectures. Before founding Tensilica in 1997, he was VP and GM of the Design Reuse Group at Synopsys. Chris also was a pioneer in developing RISC architecture and helped found MIPS Computer Systems, where he was VP of Microprocessor Development. He holds an MSEE and PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford and a BA in physics from Harvard. He holds more than 40 US and international patents. He was named an IEEE Fellow in 2015 for his work in development of microprocessor technology.

Dr. Drew Wingard Dr. Drew Wingard

About Dr. Drew Wingard

Drew Wingard co-founded Sonics in September 1996. He has been awarded 30 US patents during his time at Sonics. Prior to Sonics, Drew held R&D positions at MicroUnity Systems Engineering, Inc. and Pomegranate Technology. He received a B.S. from the University of Texas, Austin and an M.S. and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, all in Electrical Engineering.

About Prof. Paul Franzon

Paul D. Franzon is currently the Cirrus Logic Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of Graduate Programs for ECE at North Carolina State University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia. He has also worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, DSTO Australia, Australia Telecom and three companies he cofounded, Communica, LightSpin Technologies and Polymer Braille Inc. His current interests center on the technology and design of complex microsystems incorporating VLSI, advanced packaging and nano-electronics. He has lead several major efforts and published over 300 papers in these areas. In 1993 he received an NSF Young Investigators Award, in 2001 was selected to join the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Teachers, in 2003, selected as a Distinguished Alumni Professor, and received the Alcoa Research Award in 2005. He served with the Australian Army Reserve for 13 years as an Infantry Solider and Officer. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
